Auschwitz still in visitor memories

Despite the passage of time, the horrors of the former Nazi death camp at Auschwitz are still in public memory, and the site, in Poland, drew a record number of visitors last year, with 2.15 million.

The museum at the site, which includes the Auschwitz camp itself and the nearby Birkenau extermination camp, also says its website, www.auschwitz.org, got 27 million page views as people seek information about the camp where more than a million were murdered between 1940 and 1945.

The museum opened in 1947, and includes 150 buildings and other sites. Up to 2001, it seldom drew more than half a million visitors for its tours, given in 20 languages. Since then, it has risen steadily. Among last year’s visitors were 405,000 Poles, 281,000 Britons, 136,000 Americans, 116,000 Italians and 76,000 Germans.
