North Korea may be getting ready to make a big push into the beach resort business, but that’s mainly an assessment from satellite photos: the Koreans aren’t saying anything, yet.
Despite the lack of announcements, images provided by a DC-based ‘policy research group’ show that the Wonsan-Kalma Tourist Zone, a beachside area where North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is said to have summered as a child, is getting new hotels, stadiums and soccer fields and even a water park with slide.
The website 38 North, which posted the pictures, says there is also a movie theatre complex and potential arcade areas. Cash-strapped North Korea could use a boost from tourism; the Korean Central News Agency reports that Kim himself visited the project in October, and requested that the water park be added.
Looks quieter than Benidorm! 🙂
