Dublin is getting a new water taxi that criss-crosses the Liffey River, but it’s really a return trip for the boat, a ferry that retired from service in 1984 when new bridges made it redundant.
The No. 11 Liffey Ferry, which once moved boatloads of shipyard workers and others between the north and south sides of the city will be back in the water on February 11, with a three-station route not far from its original haunts. It resumes service that began with a Royal Charter in 1665.
Restored in a joint project of the Dublin City Council and Dublin Port Company, its crew includes Richie Saunders, in picture, who worked the ferry before it retired. The fare is €2, and can be paid with Dublin’s regular transit pass. Funds from the project will be used to support training for young sailors.
