There are winter festivals by the dozens all over the world, or at least the parts whose winter includes snow. But few are more elaborate than Japan’s Sapporo Snow Festival which kicks off Wednesday and continues through February 11.
Sapporo, on Japan’s northernmost island, draws over 2 million visitors a year to the events, which include some of the world’s most elaborate snow sculptures, including quite a number with a Star Wars theme, including C3P0, R2D2 and BB-8. The snow sculpture events kick off on February 4.
Participant events include snow-tubing, snow slides and an opportunity to climb on board an X-wing fighter, sculpted from snow, for photos.
