One of my favorite stops on Viking River Cruises’ Waterways of the Tsars, is Kizhi Island. Situated in the geographical center of Europe’s second largest lake, Kizhi has long been a strategic stopover for travelers. Settlements are known to have been here since the fifteenth century.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site here is home to the Open Air Museum of Architecture. Dozens of buildings including farmhouses, barns, mills and lovely wooden churches make up the site.
We visit the interiors of several buildings and watch local craftspeople weave and make shingles for the church domes.
Our knowledgeable guide as well as guides in many of the buildings makes this an educational and enjoyable stop on my 13-day cruise.
