A220 makes U.S. debut with Delta

After a bumpy ride to the airport, Delta has begun service with its new Airbus A220s, a model that started life as the Bombardier CSeries. The first flight took place Thursday morning from New York LaGuardia to Boston.

It may not be a Dreamliner, but it’s been Delta’s dream for a while, although for several months it appeared to be more of a nightmare as President Trump tried to add a 300% tariff to the price of the planes, throwing Delta’s 90-plane order into doubt.

Like many airlines, Delta will use the planes to replace smaller regional jets on routes that support its capacity of 100 seats for the A220-100 to 130 seats for the A220-300. Delta and Lufthansa are the only airlines to have ordered both types. Delta’s order of 90 planes (40 100s and 50 300s) will make it the largest operator, followed by JetBlue, which has ordered 60, and Moxy, which has also ordered 60. Moxy is a new airline project by JetBlue founder David Neeleman.

The A220 has already become popular with passengers because of its large windows, big overhead bins and big-plane feel, including wider-than-average seats.
