Southwest making big shift to 737 MAX

Southwest Airlines, the world’s largest operator of Boeing 737s, is making a big shift from its older models to the new 737 MAX, with over 300 on order or in the air. Last week, it added another dozen to its shopping cart.

The airline, which has only 737s in its fleet of about 750 planes, is the largest U.S. domestic carrier in passenger volume. It’s refreshing the fleet with the new planes at what it expects to be a rate of 10 planes per month for the next few years.

Most of the new planes will be the -8 model, which can hold up to 210 passengers in single-class service; less than 20% will be the smaller 172-passenger -7 model.
