Bike-friendly Copenhagen is getting a new feather in its two-wheel cap: It’s been selected as the site for the first stage of 2021’s Tour de France bicycle race. Two other stages will be held in Denmark before the race returns home to France.
It’s a first time for Denmark, which will be the tenth country to host the start since it was first done in 1954. In the beginning only countries with a border with France were on the list, but Denmark will now join Britain and Ireland as non-contiguous hosts.
Ahead of the announcement, it was hinted in an interview with French President Emanuel Macron, who spoke after sharing a morning bike ride in Copenhagen with Danish Prime Minister Lars Rasmussen.
