Belgium has added its support for a Dutch and French proposal to tax air travel for the benefit of the environment. The proposal is being discussed this week by the EU’s Council of Environment ministers.
Proponents say it doesn’t make sense for air travel to be taxed less than more environmentally friendly modes of travel such as trains, where there is already VAT tax on tickets, while there is none on air tickets. Another proposal would be to tax aviation fuel, which currently goes untaxed.
If the Council approves the concept, there are other levels of approval that would have to happen, and there is likely to be significant opposition.
