Key West is an unusual community in many ways, as you can see from these photos of its marina. While the marina contains many boats of all types and sizes, it also has dozens of floating homes (houseboats).
Some of these are people’s permanent residences. Others are available for vacationers to rent through companies like Airbnb and HomeAway.
I was especially drawn to this little floating shed, with the sign on it’s door proudly proclaiming “conch republic”.
While all these homes have a motor and can move about – a feature that would be useful for reaching nearby and more remote keys in still water, I wonder where they put them during a hurricane?
