Allegiant, the last U.S. airline of any size that’s strictly domestic has plans to change that, following its fellow ultra-low-cost brethren with international flights, starting with Mexico.
So far, there are no details, but the airline announced it has taken the baby steps required—applying to the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Las Vegas-based carrier, which flies point-to-point routes connecting smaller cities with vacation destinations, is expected to follow the same plan when it starts its Mexico flights. Up to now, its only experience with Mexico has been charters.
Allegiant president Maury Gallagher, in a press statement, said “Unlike other U.S. carriers, Allegiant has always been laser-focused on leisure travel and providing access to affordable, non-stop flights for those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to go on vacation. Offering service to Mexico will provide a whole new array of options for travelers to discover world-class destinations that may have been previously out of reach.”
