Nagoya Castle was completed in 1615 by the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu.  It was and is one of the largest castles in Japan and the town built around the castle is now Japan’s 4th largest city.

In  WW2, the Nagoya Castle keep was used as a regional military headquarters and POW camp. It came under air raids  from America and most of the castle and surrounding buildings were largely destroyed. Even after WW2, the castle was deemed  historically important enough to be designated a National Historic  Site.  It’s still undergoing restoration work, now focused on returning the castle to it’s original condition.

The surrounding Honmaru Palace has been rebuilt using original plans and  methods of construction. It was completed in 2018. The city is also planning on rebuilding the castle’s main keep in wood and thats scheduled to be completed in 2022.
