Austria’s McDonald’s outlets have set themselves up as outposts of the U.S. Embassy, according to a Facebook post from the embassy.
“Staff (at any McDonald’s in Austria) will assist them in making contact with the US Embassy for consular services,” the post said. Consular services include lost or stolen passports, travel assistance or finding medical or other aid.
Facebook users quickly responded, dubbing the plan ‘McPassport’ or ‘McVisa,’ but some people’s sensitivities were apparently triggered; one user wrote “Because apparently we are too incompetent to look up the U.S. embassy online?” Or perhaps when the phone you were going to look it up on is stolen?
No word on whether Mickey D and the State Department are planning to include other countries, or whether the Embassy will soon be selling Big Macs.
