Blackpool, one of Britain’s most famous and historic working-class resorts appears set to finally get a museum celebrating its colorful history and hopefully drawing new visitors.
After several attempts that failed for funding issues, a £4 million lottery grant has given the town the means to go ahead with the latest version of the project, which will be part of a major entertainment tower replacing the old Sands venue. Dubbed ‘Show Town: The Museum of Fun and Entertainment,’ it will be near Blackpool’s iconic tower.
Promoters say it’s aimed at local pride and understanding rather than trying to drum a new class of visitors. A recent number of new hotels and attractions has led some to fear the town is trying to go upmarket and leave its traditional clientele behind.
