Fedex joins rush passport business

Last-minute passports and renewals just got a lot closer to most Americans, with Fedex Office hooking up with an established passport expediter to put rush service into 2,000+ Fedex Office locations.

RushMyPassport, like others in its business, specializes in getting applications moved fast through the State Department’s expedited passport procedures, producing results in as little as 24 hours. Most expediters operate through web sites and use Fedex to move the documents. Now it will be possible to start at Fedex Office, which will be set up to produce passport pictures and help with forms to make sure all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed.

Of course, the service comes with fees, over and above the government’s own fees and Fedex shipping fees. The fees start at $99 for a 10-12 day renewal and scale up to 24-hour service at $449, with stops in between. The fees may seem high, but if you’re too close to travel to wait, there it is.

Best advice? Renew your passport by mail several months before it expires. No extra fees, and no nail-biting.
