Catalonia makes the ‘Beautiful Town’ list

Spain’s Catalonia region has its first town selected for Spain’s list of the most beautiful villages, a list that’s been growing since 2011, when Spanish groups took their lead from France’s long-running ‘Most Beautiful Villages in France’ contest.

Catalonia’s successful contestant is Baguergue, high in the Pyrenees Mountains, in the Val d’Aran. It’s a year-round attraction, with winter snow, spring wildflowers, fall leaves and, of course, summer. One of 19 towns in Spain selected this year, it held a big ceremony yesterday to kick off its inevitable publicity drive.

Among the town’s unique features are a 12th-century church and a cheesemaker claimed to be the highest cheese factory in the Pyrenees.
