Inverness is a beautiful rural community facing the Gulf of St Lawrence on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. It sits on a coal seam that was exploited in the late 19th century until the last mine closed in the early 1990s because of a fire.
Inverness is now famous as a tourist destination. It has two highly rated golf courses including Canada’s only true links Golf course, Cabot Links, that sits on former coal mining shafts, and overlooks the beaches and harbour.
It is also known for sea glass hunting because of it’s fine rocks on the beach that smooth old glass. And there is harness racing that happens in the warmer season twice a week.
