Where Gumbo Was (#335)
Congratulations, in order of guesses, goes to George G, PortMoresby, and Michael Fong II!
The Jekyll Island Club was founded in 1886 as a hunting and recreational club. During the early 1900’s it thrived as resort and its members came from the world’s wealthiest families like the Morgans, Vanderbilts and Rockefellers.
In 1910 Sen. Aldrich secretly took the top bankers from New York to Jekyll Island and they compiled a monetary system for the US which became the bases of the future Federal Reserve .And in 1915, the first transcontinental telephone call was made in Jekyll Island by Theodore Vail to Alexander Graham Bell, President Woodrow Wilson and Thomas A Watson.
The Club closed after the 1942 season. Later the State of Georgia tried to run it as a resort but it was not successful and the whole complex closed in 1971. The complex was designated a historic landmark in 1978 and by 1985 was restored and opened as a luxury resort.
