An ancient city, or perhaps layers of ancient cities, is being excavated in a place most have never heard of, but the archaeological team that is at work in Tajikistan believes it may be uncovering a find as significant as the ancient Inca city of Machu Pichu.
The first indications of a lost city came in 2012 when a local landowner found the edge of a man-made structure in the mountainous Gorno-Badakhshan region, which lies near the border between Tajikistand and Afghanistan. It turned out to be part of a fortification being referred to as ‘Castle Karon.’
Archaeologist Yusufsho Yukubov has been leading excavations there in what now has become a 100-hectare dig, with finds indicating that the site was occupied as long as 4,000 years ago, and parts may have been inhabited as recently as 500 years ago.
