SFO runway shutdown scrambles flight schedules

Airlines are scrambling to adjust flight schedules and rebook passengers through other hubs to avoid massive tie-ups when San Francisco International Airport shuts down one of its main runways for three weeks of repairs and repaving.

The shutdown, which starts Sept. 7, will especially affect flights during the busiest parts of the day. United has notified customers that it will make flight changes without fees, and will allow re-routing to avoid SFO for passengers who were transferring there. Others may also waive charges but have not yet announced.

Overall, flights at the airport will be reduced by 13% during the work.
