George Washington Memorial Park, Jackson, Wyoming

George Washington Memorial Park (aka “Town Square”) is located in the heart of Jackson Hole.  It’s best known for the arches of elk antlers at each of the park’s four main entrances, which were first constructed in the 1950s.

The antler arch show in the photo below was last weekend’s One Clue Mystery photo.  It was recognized by George G, Gay Jones, PortMoresby and Carol Philips — nicely done all of you!

The antlers are collected at nearby National Elk Refuge (elk shed their antlers every year) and are used to construct the rather attractive and large arches.

The arches are replaced from time to time as they bleach and deteriorate in the weather.  The fresher stacks of antlers are a brown color.

The park was dedicated in 1934, and to commemorate the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birthday it was named for him.  At its center is a stone memorial to famous mountain man, explorer John Colter.

Town Square is surrounded by a large variety of local businesses including restaurants, stores and art galleries.  A stagecoach ride around the park and town is offered in the summer months.  Town Square is a busy place, popular with tourists, and a good place to people watch.

Every summer evening actors put on a free shoot-out reenactment. The hugely popular scene starts at 6:15 and has been a tradition since 1957.

In winter Town Square is home to an ice skating rink.  The trees and the arches are lit up for the Holiday season.

The View North

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
