It’s a route made for an adventurer, or maybe just for an avgeek, but Norwegian Airlines is now flying a set of routes that, taken together, connect the northernmost commercial airport in the world to the southernmost.
The airline recently added service to Ushuaia, Argentina, on the southern tip of Patagonia, and the airport closest to the South Pole. Last March, the airline added flights between London Gatwick and Buenos Aires, making Gatwick the pivot point where travelers can head for Norway’s capital, Oslo. At Oslo, the next link is a flight to Norway’s isolated Arctic island territory of Svalbard; the airport at its capital Longyearben is as close as you can get to the North Pole on a commercial flight.
And it’s not a bad deal, for price: the whole trip can be had for about €430 (of course not including luggage, meals, etc.) Total time is about 25 hours, 14 of them on the long stretch from Buenos Aires to London; the total distance for the trip is about 9,800 miles. Except for a Dreamliner flight between Buenos Aires and London, the rest of the flights are on 737s.
