This is one of many Hotels around the globe affected by the closure of Thomas Cook Airlines. UK passengers have been repatriated by Virgin Atlantic. Because of the fuel embargo on Cuba, flights have to refuel in Mexico.
The Cuba Gaviota Bus service has reduced all time tables to 50% and local car drivers must stop at bus stops and take passengers to fill empty seats. And as this new photo shows, the hotel is almost a ghost town. Unfortunately Cuba has a man-made situation imposed by its neighbours, and it’s getting worse, day by day.
As usual, it’s the ordinary people who suffer the most – waiters and chambermaids who won’t get their tips any more. I know the hotel – there would usually be plenty of people in this shot. Thomas Cook was the only airline that offered direct flights to Cayo Coco from the UK.
