A new bridge, made necessary by the tragic collapse a year ago of its predecessor, is under construction in Genoa and is a sure-fire future attraction as well as a key link for the high-speed highways in the area.
The new bridge, designed by famed ‘starchitect’ Renzo Piano will replace the 1960s-era Morandi Bridge that collapsed, killing 43 people. The new bridge, by the designer of the Centre Pompidou in Paris and London’s Shard, will be over a kilometre long, and made up of 19 decks assembled off-site and then lifted onto concrete towers.
The new bridge is scheduled to open in April 2020, a stunning speed for a major project. The August 2018 collapse of the old bridge has been blamed on both design flaws and faulty maintenance by the private company that has a franchise to operate the motorways. A legal case, with 71 defendants from both company and government, is making its way through the courts.
