Cinque Terre ‘lovers’ lane’ to re-open

A fabled Cinque Terre pathway, whose name, Via dell’Amore, or Way of Love has given it renown as a lovers’ lane, will be open to lovers and others again in 2023 after a gap of over eleven years.

The path, which hugs a sheer cliff between the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola in north-west Italy’s famed string of picturesque villages, has been closed since 2012 due to rockslides and other damage. Only a small part of the kilometre-long path has been open.

The repairs could have been complete long ago, but the Cinque Terre National Park, the central government and the region of Liguria couldn’t agree on who should pay for the work, which includes extending a tunnel in the most precarious area and stabilizing rocks above and below the path. In the end, it was agreed that the Culture Ministry would pay €7 million and the other €5 million would come from Liguria and the Environment Ministry.
