A popular but dangerous attraction in Hanoi, Vietnam, is off the map as authorities ordered the closing of dozens of cafes on a street that is also a single-track railway line.
The incredibly tight space along the tracks is often filled with crowds of visitors taking pictures of the trains or selfies with the train looming behind them. But a series of near misses, and complaints by railway workers of having to make emergency stops when people don’t step out of the way, has led to the closing.
Authorities say that many of the cafes are illegal anyway, springing up without permits to take advantage of the crowds. The railway was built early in the 20th century by French colonial authorities; at the time, the buildings were not so close to the track.
