Some airports build new gates and terminals, others build luxury lounges, all in the name of passenger comfort and convenience. But Miami has extended the VIP treatment to your baggage.
The airport has just inaugurated a $342 million high-tech, high-speed automated baggage system designed to speed baggage through the airport without damaging it or losing it (a problem in the past with other automated systems).
The system includes over 9 miles of conveyor belts, 12 explosive detectors, 102 mobile inspection tables and an 18,000-square-feet “baggage reconciliation area,” along with what’s claimed to be the world’s largest airport installations of automated vehicles which bring the bags directly to 52 TSA inspection stations without the agents having to lift them.
The cost, with $100 million of it paid by TSA, is part of a $4+ billion upgrade of the whole airport, enabling it to grow to 77 million passengers a year.
