New Laguardia takes another big step

New York’s Laguardia Airport, mocked for years as old, cramped and worthy of a third-world country, marked another step in its transformation to the 21st century with the opening of its second new concourse, this one a seven-gate arm that will serve Delta, and especially its shuttle services to Boston and Washington.

The other new concourse, opened several months ago, was the airport’s first new facility since the 1960s. The $8 billion project, complete with new highway and internal bridges and two new terminals with 98 gates, is being built on the existing airport, without curtailing flight activities.

By moving the terminals up against the nearby highway, the plan creates more than two miles of extra taxiing spaces, which is expected to improve on-time operations. The last of the work, begun in early 2017, should be finished by 2022.
