Mexico’s Baja California Sur state government wants more money from tourists for infrastructure and social service works.
Baja Sur is home to popular resorts such as Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cobo and La Paz, and also to large non-resort areas that are desperately poor and don’t benefit from the resort areas.
Several other Mexican states charge tourism taxes, but they are mostly tucked into hotel surcharges or airport use fees, and are often criticized for being directed to more tourism development. Baja Sur expects to collect its tax directly from travelers as they pass through the area’s airports. The tax goes into effect this Saturday.
