Union Square Holiday Market – Annual New York Tradition

Last year we spent a wonderful week in New York City. The city is always amazing, but it is truly magical at Christmas. Besides the beautiful tree at Rockefeller Center and decorations everywhere, they also have many Christmas Markets. We were lucky enough to be able to explore two of them while we were there, Bryant Park and Union Square. They were both incredible, but I think I liked the one at Union Square a little more.

Union Square 3Every year they have millions of people come and browse the unique gifts created by local craftsmen and artists. I loved walking about all the little boutiques and chatting with some of the store owners. My husband Gene was a trooper and really enjoyed talking to the pizza guy about his peels, his oven and the whole process. So I guess it wasn’t all bad for him, lol.

TUnion Square 5 They had a beautiful little area all decked out around the impressive equestrian statue of George Washington. They also have heating lamps which helped a lot. It was fun to sit and people watch while enjoying a hot chocolate.

Union Square 4The Union Square Holiday Market has 150 plus vendors, including a “Little Brooklyn” and very year there’s at least one booth selling Glühwein, a warm, mulled wine spiced with cinnamon and sugar that is a staple at the German markets. Hope to see that in Germany one year!

Union Square 2This is due to the fact that the Union Square market is based on Christkindlmarkts, a traditional holiday street markets held during advent that began in Germany. It’s sort of a tradition now.

Union Square 7The Union Square Holiday Market runs from November 21st to December 24th. It’s open Monday-Friday from 11am to 8pm; Saturday from 10am to 8pm; and Sunday from 11am to 7pm.

Union Square 6More information and a list of vendors can be found on their website. We had a wonderful time and I hope you can make it the next time  you are in New York at Christmas time. Happy travels and Merry Christmas.

Union Square 8Below is a map and a list of vendors if there is something specific you are looking for. Or you can just shop til you drop, lol. Either way, have fun, and Merry Christmas.

The View North

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
