This California Historical Landmark, in San Juan Capistrano, near the famous mission, was built in 1840 and was originally two separate structures. The northern building was a residence. The southern building, over the years, was a stage depot, courtroom and jail. The two were connected around 1911 and renovated to serve as two homes. It was made into a restaurant in 1948.
I went to El Adobe several times when growing up in California and I’ve always wanted to return. The things I remembered were the neat architecture and the menu stating President Nixon used to go there while President. In fact, he liked their Mexican food so much, the restaurant started specializing in Mexican food.
The building itself is better than ever after a remodel in 2003. The food is quite tasty and the service was excellent. If you are visiting the nearby mission, this restaurant is a must see.
