Becoming vegan is something that more and more people are getting into these days. It’s not just a change in diet but also in lifestyle as well. You don’t need to be a scientist to know that we are currently living on a dying planet because of our insatiable desire for irreplaceable resources. Vegans tend to be more mindful of the source as well as the environmental impact of their waste and the foods they eat, which reduces their carbon footprint.
Various Cities in India
Vegans and vegetarians have been around for thousands of years. This is not really a city but India is considered to have the largest plant-based population in the world, comprising about 40% of their 1.3 billion people. Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains are some good examples of religious people who practice strict code of conduct against the maltreatment of animals.
If you are on an international food trip, there are also other vegan-friendly places in Asia that you can explore. Here are a few examples:
Seattle, Washington
Apart from long spells of soft drizzle, the city of Seattle in Washington is also well-known for its commitment to the environment and is now embracing plant-based meals as a way to reduce meat consumption and their carbon footprint.
Aside from that, the city also caters to the high brow. It is where Microsoft is headquartered as well as other large tech firms. With this, it comes as no surprise that it has spots such as Emerald Landing, which is a luxury harbor for yachts.
Singapore the City State
A prosperous city-state, perhaps the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, Singapore is a port city built on the numerous cultures from all around the area. It is home to some of the most picturesque airports. Given the wealth of its citizens, the city is also replete with ports that pretty much resemble the luxurious yacht harbors in Seattle.
Aside from the city’s affluence and unique lifestyle offers, their vegan burgers are also among the main reasons vegan tourists love visiting the city so much. The burgers are usually paired with seasoned fries and their signature iced tea.
Vegan versions of their traditional cuisine are also popular. Very good examples are the nutty buah keluak and their clay-pot “chicken” curry.
Together with the city’s dedication to sustainable and responsible waste processing, Singapore is definitely a model city of the future.
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Have you heard of the famous Songkran festival? Tourists from all over the world–ranging from those who are novices in need of travel assistance to seasoned travelers– come and take part in the celebrations of the traditional Thai New Year with a water fight like no other.
Chiang Mai isn’t only famous for Songkran but also for their vegan cuisine. Did you know that the khanom khrok—a traditional Thai pancake made with rice flour and coconut milk—is vegan? This is just one of the many recipes that shows how veganism is inherent to the Thais. Personally, my all time favourite would be the nam hed song kreung, a meatless sausage made of mushrooms.
The continued rise of vegan practices and guilt-free lifestyles all across the world is a testament to the current generation’s dedication to health. There is still a long way to go, but the presence of hotspots for vegans is already a great achievement.
