Rocky Creek Bridge, Big Sur, California

Where Gumbo Was #361

Gumbo was found at Rocky Creek Bridge, on the Big Sur Coast of California. Congratulations to George G for finding him, and to Port Moresby who identified the clue locations! The concrete open-spandrel arch bridge was built in 1932. It’s about a mile from the famous Bixby Creek Bridge.

The Big Sur Coast is one of the most scenic anywhere. It stretches from the Carmel Highlands to San Simeon. It  has a small population base but because of its beauty and location attracts about the same number of visitors as Yosemite. There is also abundant wildlife.

One iconic stop is  the restaurant, Nepenthe, which was started in 1949 by Bill and Lolly Fassett. They purchased it from Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth, who intended to use it as a vacation home but never did. It has been a base for locals during many mudslides that closed the highway and  also for artists and actors.  The view, playing ping pong and the food, keep people coming back. They are famous for their burgers.
