New York-Boston seaplane service coming

Cape Air is planning to bring scheduled seaplane service between Boston’s downtown waterfront and Manhattan’s 23rd Street Skyport, competing with both Amtrak and other airlines for the popular city pair.

The airline, which began as a Boston to Cape Cod service, now operates several regional services both around Massachusetts and in the Midwest. Dan Wolf, head of Cape Air, has been trying for seven years to get permission for the route, but had previously been blocked by harbor cruise lines and others in Boston. But recently, permission has been given for a one-year trial, which may begin as early as March.

It’s not going to be a mass-market service, though. The four daily trips will cost about $400 each way.
