Air New Zealand to test beds in economy

The lie-flat seat that’s the big sell for premium passengers may be coming to the back of the plane, at least for a few passengers at a time if Air New Zealand is approved to test its ‘Skynest’ idea.

The airline plans to create a back of the plane area with six beds equipped with pillow, bedding and a privacy curtain. Passengers would have to be strapped in their seats for take-off and landing, before taking their pre-reserved time in the sack. The pod spots would be sold for segments, rather than for the entire flight.

Tests won’t begin for at least a year to allow for testing and government approvals, but the airline says “This is a game-changer on so many levels.” The airline also says it’s willing to license the Skynest to other airlines.
