A coalition of 26 craft brewers in Portugal has turned to brewing disinfectant instead of their beers and ales. With people staying home and bars closed, they have the time to swivel to their new product—and they had the ingredients on hand.
The disinfectant, which is intended for counters, floors and other surfaces rather than hands because of its strength, is made from peracetic acid. “We always have this product available because it is what we use to kill all the bacteria. It is bactericidal, fungicidal and viruscidal. So we decided to gather as much as we could, we gathered all the sprinklers we managed to get and, since Monday, we have already made 80,000 litres of disinfectant solution,” according to Lusa Sofia Oliveira, one of the promoters and owner of Lindinha Lucas brewery in Porto.
One brewery and bar owner, Hugo Santos, told Portuguese press that the project will keep him busy throughout the state of emergency: “I will have to continue doing something, because in this there are no sales. The bar is closed and the brewery is stopped because there are no bars to sell beer to.”
