Cuba, which for years has done everything it could to invite overseas visitors, has now slammed the door as part of its fight against Covid-19, and imposed strict new rules on those who are there.
All foreign vessels, including cruise ships, have been ordered to sail immediately, all international flights are cancelled except for government-arranged repatriation flights, visitors who arrived after March 17 will all be tested, and all visitors are ‘confined to quarters’ in government-run and supervised hotels.
Visitors who are staying in private quarters have been ordered to stay there, indoors, until the government arranges transfer to a government hotel. Medical care will be arranged for those who need it, with the note that while Cuba’s highly-regarded medical system is free for Cubans, visitors will get a bill.
The last scheduled commercial flights were on April 1. A repatriation flight via Rome was scheduled for yesterday, and UK Embassy in Havana advised British travelers still in Cuba to sign up for it.
