The Railway was very important to  Prince Edward Island. The Island decided to go it alone and not be part of the Confederation when Canada was created in 1867. In 1871, the Island decided the to build a railway. By 1873, the Island was running out of money  and decided to join Canada. Canada agreed to complete and run the Railway. Elmira was added in 1912.

Elmira was the eastern terminus of the railway that ran tip to tip. In 1918, it merged into CNR. The railway was eventually abandoned in 1989. It now forms the Confederation Trail. Elmira station is now a railway museum.
