As I walked up the Spanish Steps, dark menacing storm clouds hovered over Rome. I turned onto Via d. Trinita dei Monti, intent to enter the Borghese Gardens. I stopped in my tracks when I saw someone had kindly put a straw hat with a red rose on Italian writer and politician Francesco Domenico Guerrazzi that would protect his sculpted bust from the rain.

Haberdashery for sculptures seems to be a thing these days; here are two from last Spring in Scotland…Sir Walter Scott in Edinburgh and the Duke of Wellington (and his horse) in Glasgow. Somewhere I’ve also an image of Gutenberg in Strasbourg, wearing a life preserver.
