The Flamingo Visitor Center is located in the southern most portion of Everglades National Park, adjoining the Gulf of Mexico. It’s important in providing boat and kayak access to the ocean and nearby islands. Boat tours are available and popular.
An important feature of the Flamingo Visitor Center is its marina, pictured above, which has a store, boat landing and docks. Looking from the marina to the sea, here’s what the scenery looks like:
The actual Visitor Center itself was closed when we visited because it had sustained significant hurricane damage and was undergoing major renovation. It is the building featured below.
There was a drainage pipe immediately below the visitor center at which manatee were gathering. I’m not sure what they were doing, but it looked like they might have been eating some of the algae growing here.
This great blue heron posed nicely on the docks of marina and seemed quite used to having people about.
