I’d never heard of a “lur” before visiting Denmark.  My first introduction to them was this statue of two Lur blowers in Copenhagen’s City Hall square.  It lead me to do a little research into the topic.

A lur is a type of bronze horn dating to the Late Bronze Age (c. 1000 BC).  They are curved tubes resembling an oxen horn. It is thought that they were used to sound the battle cry.  Perhaps they had a role in rituals, and perhaps to entertain.

In Denmark lurs are usually found in pairs preserved in bog deposits.  These are examples of ancient lurs on display at the National Museum of Denmark.
