As Europe begins to roll back some of its travel restrictions, mostly at first for domestic or neighbor-country visitors, there are incentives in the wind to try to save some of this year’s vacation season by encouraging visitors with incentives.
Sicily has already announced plans to subsidize hotel rooms for visitors. Greece, which will allow international visitors from July 1, is cutting its VAT rate on public transportation and non-alcoholic drinks by nearly half and may cut more categories; Ireland is considering a 0% VAT on tourism-related expenditures.
And the UK, which is further than most European countries from opening to international visitors, is considering adding an additional Bank Holiday later in the year to create another four-day weekend opportunity for Brits to visit favorite beaches and other vacation spots—and put some money back into hotels and attractions.
