Scratch all the recent stories about U.S.-based cruise lines gearing up to start cruises again as early as August with the Center for Disease Control’s ‘no sail’ order expiring July 24. The Cruise Lines International Association, which represents about 95% of the industry has voluntarily extended the shutdown to September 15.
In a press statement a CLIA spokesperson said “Although we had hoped that cruise activity in the U.S. could resume as soon as possible after that date (July 24), it is increasingly clear that more time will be needed to resolve barriers to resumption in the United States.” The U.S. is part of the vast majority of cruise itineraries.
The association says it wants passengers to feel secure that all preparations for safety are in place before it starts, and notes that if necessary, it will extend the date further. The order by CDC, and its extension by CLIA, do not apply to ships with under 250 passengers and crew.
