July 1, 2020: Canada Day Parade, Ignace, Ontario

Last summer my father and I were driving through northwestern Ontario on Canada Day, approaching the small and remote town of Ignace. The photo below shows about all there is to Ignace; it was taken from a viewpoint on a hill to the east of town.

It was July 1st, Canada Day, and as we entered town we were surprised to see the TransCanada highway — the most important road in the country — blocked by this fire truck.  All traffic ground to a halt….

The reason was not immediately apparent, but soon we saw a small parade begin on a side road, then move onto the TransCanada highway….

They marched a number of blocks at a rather slow speed, before the parade finally ended….

Traffic finally resumed, but it delayed us about a half hour.  Still it was interesting to see this simple celebration of Canada’s birthday — more important for the residents to celebrate than to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

It’s good to Celebrate your Countries National Day without a group trying to steal your Parade. Love it !
