Continuing an annual ritual that combines public voting and a TV series, France has once again elected a ‘Le Village Préféré des Français’ or, in English, ‘France’s Favorite Village,’ and once again it’s in Alsace.
Hunspach, about 60km north of Strasbourg, is the third Alsatian village to have won the contest in recent years. The second place went overseas to Les Anses-d’Arlet in the French overseas territory of Martinique and the third place went to Ménerbes in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur southern region.
Hunspach is noted for its traditional Alsationa architecture, with milky white houses decorated with black stripes and gardens filled with potted flowers.
The TV show, with the same name as the contest, draws millions of visitors. Each of the fourteen finalists is the subject of a full-length visit, and winning villages can count on a sizable boost in visits and tourist revenue.
