New Saudi airport to imitate a mirage

Saudi Arabia’s luxury resort development at Amaala is getting an airport that its designers intend to be more notable than noticeable—its exterior and interiors are designed to resemble a desert mirage.

The terminal and control tower were designed by the British firm Foster and Partners, led by starchitect Norman Foster, and are to be finished by 2023. It’s not a huge airport, expecting to handle about one million travelers a year, compared to over forty million at Saudi Arabia’s largest airport at Jeddah.

The airport is scheduled to open in 2023. The interiors (above) are also meant to suggest light and openness, and feature unique artwork.

And for those who don’t care for the desert sun, private jets will be able to taxi directly into climate-controlled hangars that connect directly into the terminal.
