Spotted off the Road: Red Ferrari Mondial

Not just off the road, but under water for 26 hears, and now saved from the scrapyard.

A bright red 1987 Ferrari Mondial was found earlier this month in Amsterdam by fire service divers working in the IJ river. It was reported stolen in 1994. The deadline for any prosecution is long past, and police said it would be sold for scrap and sent it to the De Ooyevaar scrap yard.

And then the inquiries started pouring in from people who wanted to save it, to buy it, to have it donated to a museum (several museums have expressed interest). A local artist organized a campaign to have it displayed as an artwork near the canal.

Lowie Hoedt, one of the owners of the scrapper, has a different idea: He wants it to go back into the water. The Artis Zoo recently renovated one of its acquariums as a life-size model of an Amsterdam canal, and Hoedt says he’s ready to donate the car to them to add to the exhibit.
