SFO: Fun with foam in fire safety test

San Francisco International Airport recently gave the fire suppression system in its ‘super-bay’ hangar a test, and invited the press along to watch as the giant room filled up with fire suppression foam in just a few minutes.

Workers lit a small controlled fire on the floor of the huge hangar, usually occupied by American Airlines, and let it trigger the overhead foam system, which has 48 sensors and dozens of outlets.

In preparation for testing the system, which airport officials compare to “a huge cotton candy dispenser that’s gone haywire,” engineers built plastic walls around the space to keep the foam from leaking outdoors.

Sadly the video the airport released is not compatible with our format, but as a replacement, here’s a video of a similar test conducted by NASA.
