Stanford Quad, California

When I think of university campuses, I usually imagine red-brick buildings with stone columns and Grecian pediments, but the founders of California’s Stanford University obviously had another, and equally handsome, model in mind.

The cluster of buildings which form the Main Quad and oldest part of the university speak of Spain, and sunlight, and even the color of adobe. It’s a very handsome collection of buildings indeed, with a lot of fine detailing.

At the center of the main court, the elaborately-facaded Stanford Memorial Church; the school was established by Leland and Jane Stanford as a memorial to their young son of the founders, who died at 15.P1030331P1030332
