Amsterdam, the city that never gives up on solving its ‘wild peeing’ problem has come up with a new idea that’s being installed in the city’s Red Light district and other busy nightlife areas. This time, it’s an oversize planter fitted with urinals.
Called a GreenPee, the facility holds urine for eventual recovery of phosphates as fertilizer; the decorative plants are fed by rainwater trapped in the central area. It was invented by Richard DeVries, an environmental psychologist who hopes it might not only change behavior, but possibly also help the environment. That’s him in the photo above.
The urninal portion is meant to be used only at night. The city is funding the devices, which cost €4 to 5 thousand each with funds intended to reduce nightlife nuisances; it is monitoring the project and hoping to find a way it can be adapted for use by women.
